Professor Ntsebeza Shares His Vision for the SIRC Information Hub

The Sakhisizwe Information and Research Centre (SIRC) is built on a simple but powerful idea: expanding access to knowledge in historically disadvantaged rural communities. In this in-depth conversation with Luphiwo Tanda, Professor Lungisile Ntsebeza—founder of SIRC and Emeritus Professor at the University of Cape Town—reflects on the journey that led to the establishing the Information Hub in Cala, as well as the values and objectives that continue to shape its development.

In the video, Professor Ntsebeza traces the origins of his vision back to his early reflections on retirement. Rather than stepping away from intellectual work, he chose to devote his energy to strengthening education and research in the very communities that shaped him—particularly in Cala. Over more than four decades, he accumulated a significant personal library and archive. Instead of keeping these materials in academic spaces far removed from rural life, he made the deliberate decision to relocate them to Cala so that learners, educators, and researchers could benefit directly.

Professor Ntsebeza emphasizes the importance of building a space where people can read, think critically and engage with high-quality educational resources. He also highlights the role of the Information Hub in preserving local histories, supporting community-based research and fostering collaborations with organizations committed to transforming education.

This conversation offers a unique insight into the intellectual, personal and community-driven motivations behind SIRC. It also provides a glimpse into the long-term vision: a living, growing archive and resource centre that supports future generations of learners in the Chris Hani District.
